DURATION: 3 Days & 2 Nights
AirAsia/AK5160: ETD 0715 & ETA 1000. Meet and greet at Sandakan airport and travel for one hour to Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary. The final stretch of the drive takes you through gravelled roads and jeep tracks of plantation estates. Upon arrival, proceed to the observation area; visitors will have the delight of having a reasonably close encounter and magnificent sight of these elusive monkeys. Found in most coastal areas of Borneo, they live in groups of 11-32 and almost exclusively in mangrove forests near fresh water and in lowlandrainforests. Viewing time is at 1130am.
Depart at 1230pm for Sepilok; stop at Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) to visit the botanical garden, on the way to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Have lunch in Sepilok (own arrangement) and then proceed to the feeding platform for the standard 0300pm feeding time of the primates. Watch a short but informative video presentation on the centre’s role in rehabilitation project before leaving at 0430pm for Sandakan. Check in at Sabah Hotel in Sandakan and guests are free at leisure in the evening.
After breakfast, depart at 0830am for Sabah Parks jetty for a boat transfer that leaves at 0930am for Turtle Island Park. The journey to Selingan Island takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour. Upon arrival, register at Turtle Island Parks HQ and check into a chalet. At 1215pm have lunch at the cafeteria and then free at own leisure. You can choose to laze around the beach or snorkel while waiting for the evening’s event. The west side of the island provides an ideal place for this as it is clean, quiet and offers some interesting coral and sea life for a decent day’s snorkelling. After dinner, wait for rangers call to observe turtle laying eggs. Rangers will transfer the eggs to the hatchery and if there are young turtle hatchlings, there is an opportunity to observe the release of baby turtles to the open sea. Then overnight at chalet (Common or Attached Bathroom).
After an early breakfast, depart at 0700am for the mainland. Then transfer to Sandakan Airport (ETA 0900am) for the return flight to Kuala Lumpur. AirAsia/AK5161: ETD 1025 & ETA 1310. END OF SERVICE.
The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre was set up in 1964 to rehabilitate orphaned baby orangutan. Set in the lush 4,300-hectare Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, the Centre under the administration of the Sabah Wildlife Department attracts tourists and researchers alike, giving them the opportunity to watch the orangutan up close in their natural habitat. A boardwalk leads you to a viewing gallery and feeding platform where the apes are fed milk and bananas twice a day at 10.00am and 3.00pm by rangers. Feeding time also attracts long-tailed macaques to the area.
A new attraction just a walking distance from the orangutan centre is the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC). This centre offers the gateway to getting to know the uniqueness and importance of Borneo’s rainforests. The RDC’s main highlights are its exhibition halls, the Plant Discovery Garden, the Kapili-Sepilok Forest Reserve, environmental education programmes and a small lake for boat rides.
